Choosing the Officiant for your Wedding
Your wedding is one of the most important days in your life. Tailoring to couples desired needs, Rev Alva Folkes offers a variety of services to choose from. Ceremonies such as Traditional, Spiritual, Renewal, Unity Candle, Rose, Sand and Hand Fasting. Alva believes that each wedding should be as unique and original as you. When choosing who is to perform this service consider the following: Do they listen to what YOU want and make suggestions to personalize the service? Do they encourage you to put your thought and feelings into the vows? Do they allow pictures during the ceremony? Will they do a rehearsal? Will they perform the service at a venue of your choice?
When it comes to weddings these days, anything goes. Formal Church Weddings are declining and couples are choosing more simple, intimate ceremonies with meaning and inspiration.
Wedding Officiants are providing more options for your nuptials. There's so many..... from Religious,Spiritual, Unity and Renewal, to Rose Candle, Sand and Ribbon. So what IS the difference between all of these?
Since I'm out of touch being a guest at a wedding, I asked Reverend Alva Folkes, if she could clarify some of the different ceremonies.
According to Alva.....
- Religious Ceremony - is formal and defining of the religious elements. Very often they combine rituals and traditions from one or more denominations.
- Spiritual Ceremony - means different things to different people. Most often the context is either the religious or sacred, and/or divine feelings or essence, underneath the religious element. It often uses beautiful, inspiring words but is universal and stays away from a particular religion.
- Unity Ceremony - symbolizes the union of two lives and two families together. It is the lighting of two individual candles which then light a larger unity candle. This represents the unification of the two lives and the two families into one.
- Rose Ceremony - a symbolic ceremony using roses, the symbol of love. Roses are exchanged as the bride and groom's first gift to each other as a married couple. A gift of abiding love within the devotion of marriage. It is often kept secret from the family until the roses are presented. Adding a part for children, it is appropriate to acknowledge how much they are loved by including them.
- Sand Ceremony - a beautiful and meaningful addition to your vows. The sand is poured from two individual containers into a third, representing the blend of two lives joined together as one. The full vase of sand then becomes a keepsake and a reminder of the special day.
- Ribbon - an ancient Celtic practice in which the officiant loosely ties the hands of the bride and groom with a ribbon or cord while addressing the union. It is traditional in that it acknowledges the virtues and blessings of the East, West, North and South in support of the marriage.
